Descripción
The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), in its drive to develop the livestock sector and reduce the number of live animals and livestock products being imported, has embarked on a comprehensive programme to operationalize the abattoir and revitalize the small ruminant sector in the sister island of Carriacou. This was necessary for food security and the revitalization of the rural economy, which has been adversely affected by challenges such as pest and disease to traditional crops such as coconut and citrus. The development of the livestock sector in Grenada will include the expansion of domestic production, particularly poultry, small ruminants, cattle and pigs. This goes hand in hand with strengthening the technical capacity of stakeholders and improving the genetic material of current stock and introducing new breeds that are tolerant to the local climatic conditions. The recently commissioned national abattoir was designed to support an increase in the local livestock production and meat consumption. The implementation of a comprehensive livestock development strategy using the bioeconomy approach will consider the sustainable use of renewable biological resources for food, feed and bioenergy. This will present opportunities to develop new business models to incorporate new products and explore new markets. As new business models develop, there will be a demand for improved technologies, skilled labour and access to financial resources. The bioeconomy approach to the development of the livestock production, meat harvesting, processing and marketing strategy is a necessary precondition for the accelerated growth of the livestock sector in Grenada and start-ups. Once the strategy has been developed and approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, it will be used to mobilize resources to implement the policies and actions to develop the livestock sector. The biomass produced by the livestock sector will create further value where the farmers themselves can become biomass processors rather than suppliers of biomass and be able to capture a fair share of the value added. In the long-term bioeconomy, approach should contribute to creating more jobs and improved growth in rural economy.
