Descripción
The project "Leveraging Carbon and Market Incentives to Positively Transform the Livestock Sector in Colombia" seeks to integrate the livestock value chain through market incentives and carbon financing, promoting sustainability, gender equity, and traceability. Implemented in three key regions, it supports small and medium-sized producers in obtaining Aval GANSO certification, improving their access to differentiated markets and generating income through carbon credits. The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) leads two of the eight key outputs, focusing on capacity building in carbon markets and research on the role of government. Additionally, it organizes workshops, produces a paper on carbon markets, and contributes to a gender study within the livestock value chain.
Objetivo General:
Promote the vertical integration of the livestock value chain in Colombia through market incentives and carbon financing, with a focus on social inclusion and gender equity, to foster sustainable and low-carbon livestock production.
Objetivos Específicos:
  1. Implement the Aval GANSO Sustainability Certification as a best practice standard for small and medium-sized livestock producers, facilitating their access to more sustainable and profitable markets.
  2. Strengthen the integration of small and medium producers with fattening farms and large retailers, ensuring economic incentives and promoting zero-deforestation commitments across the value chain.
  3. Develop a carbon financing program to generate additional income for producers through the sale of carbon credits, encouraging the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.
  4. Provide technical assistance to producers to obtain Aval GANSO certification and access carbon financing, improving the environmental and productive management of their farms.
  5. Promote the participation of women and vulnerable populations in livestock production by reducing barriers to certification, financing, and market access.
  6. Enhance traceability and formalization of the livestock sector through technologies and mechanisms that track product origin and sustainability.
  7. Generate knowledge and influence public policy through studies on women's roles in livestock farming and the impact of carbon markets on the agricultural sector, contributing to just rural transition strategies.
Resultados Esperados:
  1. Result: Capacity building on carbon markets in the agricultural sector.
  2. Research paper on the role of the government in promoting carbon markets in the agricultural sector.
