Descripción
This project will support Cartagena´s Protocol on Biosafety and science-based regulatory systems for the development of agriculture biotechnology in the Latin American and the Caribbean Countries. The project will include activities that support the goals to increase access to, and markets for, U.S. agricultural biotech or genetically engineered crops, and to promote the technology´s role in addressing food security and climate change adaptation and mitigation. The activities will support promoting science-based regulatory systems; engaging with key decision makers and influencers of the technology to enhance understanding of the potential economic and societal contributions of agricultural biotech; and developing alliances to foster collaboration and common messaging at international fora.
Objetivo General:
Advocate science and risk-based international trade policies in order to minimize the risk of trade disruptions associated with the use of new production technologies.
Objetivos Específicos:
  1. To organize preparatory COP/MOP meetings (either on-site or virtually) for fostering information exchange and discussion and by doing so support countries delegations to participate in COP/MOP (in short: Pre-COP/MOP 2020).
  2. To carry out follow up COP/MOP activities in order to motivate authorities to continue the discussion of several issues in a systematic way (In short: COP/MOP 2021).
  3. To support policy harmonization in biotechnology and biosafety in the framework of the bilateral union agreement between Honduras and Guatemala (and eventually El Salvador, and within the region) by carrying out biosafety training and by fostering communication activities. (In short: harmonization GUA-HON 2020 & 2021).
  4. To facilitate the alignment of regulatory and policy approaches for precision biotechnology in the Americas by sharing practical regulatory experiences of selected countries. (In short: Precision biotechnology activities 2020).
  5. To support building capacity activities by enabling practical training on genome editing (In short: Genome editing 2021).
  6. To facilitate, both technically and logistically, the organization of activities in the framework of the International Workshop on Animal Biotechnology. (In short: Animal Biotech 2020).
  7. To support regional training on risk assessment for food, feed and processing, and to share practical experiences of selected countries (In short: Risk Assessment 2021).
  8. To support efficient communication of biotechnology and to share practical experiences of selected countries (In short: Biotech Communication 2021).
  9. To support the efforts in the Global LLP Initiative (GLI) and follow on activities. (In short: LLP 2020 & 2021).
  10. To share Argentina and Paraguay’s technical and regulatory experiences with target groups of Peru and Uruguay. (In short: Southern cone activities 2021).
  11. To facilitate a meeting and activities of the like-minded countries. (In short: LMG activities 2021).
